broadcast to passing FM car radios arriving & leaving my community

 

 

a sound wave hi hi, as you drive on by bye

 

the installation goes live one day in JULY...

context

Dad turned 56, and then returned to the cosmos in July 1986.
that taught me early on that life is short...

I am turning 56 in July 2026. 'Sound Wave' is a 56minute piece.

He adored Nature, metaphysics, love & truth, adventure, jazz, prisms etc etc,

and positive thinking.. i just read his spiritual muse was into positive thinking,
something i refined and defined my own way, in my 50's, with '+ve intent'.

A friend of his was the painter Winifred Nicholson, who asked him to discuss
the science and so forth, around light and colour. He gave her a prism, which
she carried around, so she always had a rainbow to hand, in her pocket!

Delightful. We used to stay with her on Hadrians Wall when i was 5ish+ etc.
At the end of her land was the LYC gallery, where i enjoyed early exposure
to creating ideas and art, that has stuck with me, right up to today.

Other people passing through LYC then, became later life inspirations.
Andy Goldsworthy threw his sticks in the air on the hills outside,
photographed them in flight, which was the sculpture. Wow.
I first discovered that age 20 in architecture school.
Delia Derbyshire was also around LYC back then.
I did go on to explore sound myself.
Magical alignments.


Part of dads Ecological Physics research dealt with him,

'refining radar-wave transmissions'

The road behind my hedge, is the main route in and out of my community.

 

An ensemble of tape loop players will perform my 'Sound Wave',
to anyone driving in and out of town, on the big road behind my fence.

The sound is radio transmitted only to this road outside

to drivers listening on the FM radio dial in their car

as they drive through my rainbow of sound

as a wave, hellooooo !

I bought a novel by EM Forster about a boy who lived nearby my home, Narnia.

"The Celestial Omnibus", 1911.
I read the line about hearing a rainbow...
Oh... indeed that intrigued me.

I stopped reading and started daydreaming...
the idea drifted onwards into the Sound Wave vibe,
embracing that colourful up-lifting abstract ethereal feeling,
of sparkling floating existential light perhaps :-?
who knows... give it a go go.
a reflection of perfection?
seems neccessary.

Composition

I caught one magic moment,
and then, as if by magic, many lovely loop pedal layers emerged,
with pitch, parametric EQ, cut'n'paste, edits edits edits, fade fade fade,
incorporating location recordings in the heart of Narnia, burning bright.
I used no synth keyboards & somehow no reverb in the numerous layers here,
which puzzles me, as it is a highly resonant space!

 

 

Not a lot happens in this peace piece, thankfully,

yet eeeverything changes all the time, yahooo.

The cars passing through the installation version,
get just a few seconds of Sound Wave,

but, there is a roundabout, at both ends of that road :->
so you can drive through on an infinity loop, non stop,
as i did testing my last album mix. 3am bliss.

I recorded dad on this cassette in my bedroom age 14, in 1984,
being interviewed by Martin, in a World Service christmas lecture series.

i defo do see these universal alignments all around all the time.
i am consciously open to expecting them, and they appear,
like Mr Benn, "as if by magic".

like Joy... it can be anywhere, if we notice it.

Double Rainbow seen from the other side of town as i was photographing the tape loop ensemble above... the wet ground is from this rainbow cloud.. i was technically at the end of this rainbow at this moment, on the right. true story. xxx
